I am a political scientist teaching at the leading international affairs school in Canada: the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. I wear many hats including Director of the Canadian Defence and Security Network, Co-host of the Battle Rhythm podcast, Blogger, Pundit, Father/Husband, Retired Ultimate Frisbee Player, lover of pop culture, intermediate skier, and dual citizen. To be clear, I have received in the past and continue to receive grant money from Canada’s Department of National Defence via its MINDS program. I have also received money at various times from the Council on Foreign Relations, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Social Science Research Council, the Carnegie Corporation, and others. None of these or other agencies have told me what to write or say, and that kind of conversation would go badly. I treasure my academic freedom, and I speak my mind when I appear in the media. One could question what I say based on where I have received grant money, but that would be ignoring my established record for criticizing those who feed me.
